Codfish Island or Whenua Hou is a small South Pacific island west of Stewart Island in southern New Zealand . It is 14 km²; the highest point at 249 m above sea level is located near the south coast.
The island's English name is derived from the sand perch species Parapercis colias , which is known as blue cod . The Māori called the island "new land" ( Whenua Hou ).
population
The island is uninhabited. At times, some biologists live at Sealers Bay . The only means of transport to the outside world is the helicopter . Since landing on the island is not permitted without a special permit, there are hardly any tourists on the island.
natural reserve
Codfish Island is a bird sanctuary . In 1998, introduced rats were eliminated so that the island is once again a safe refuge for endemic flora and fauna. The protection project serves u. a. the protection of the kakapo , an endangered, flightless bird from the family of true parrots (Psittacidae), the population of which has declined sharply in the last century. The kakapo is only found on Anchor Island .
