The Cognos AG is a private education company based in Hamburg ; the administration is based in Cologne . The artificial name Cognos is derived from the Latin verb cognoscere (dt .: recognize, experience). The company operates vocational schools, universities, academies and institutes for professional development. The main shareholders of the unlisted AG are Arend Oetker and Ludwig Fresenius.

history

Cognos AG in its present form has existed since 1989. Before that, the company was on the market under the name IFBE Institute for Vocational Adult Education.

IFBE Institute for Vocational Adult Education

The IFBE Institute was founded in 1975 in Hamburg by Bernhard Peters and Rolf Schmidt. The company's focus at the beginning was on setting up advanced training and retraining centers. In 1979 the company started setting up technical and commercial training centers, followed in 1980 by setting up medical training centers with state recognition. In 1989 the company acquired 14 state-recognized vocational schools in the medical-technical field and introduced the brand name DIE SCHULE for professions with a future for training in health professions.

Cognos AG

In 1989, the IFBE Institute for Occupational Adult Education was renamed Cognos AG . In the years that followed, the company grew through the expansion of existing investments and the acquisition of external educational institutions.

In 1989, Cognos AG acquired the Bad Harzburg Management Academy (today: Academy for Business Executives) and thus expanded to include an institution outside of the healthcare sector. In 1995 she entered the university market with a stake in the Hochschule Fresenius (then: Europa Fachhochschule Fresenius). In 2001, the move abroad followed with the acquisition of the University of Regional Development and Banking Institute in Prague.

The Hochschule Fresenius currently has locations and study centers in Idstein, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Berlin, Heidelberg and New York City (USA) and offers five departments (chemistry & biology, health & social affairs, economics & Media, design, onlineplus). The Ludwig Fresenius Schools have around 80 facilities at 30 locations in Germany. The company grew in 2013 with the acquisition of the Dr. W. Blindow, whose locations were integrated into the Ludwig Fresenius schools. The offer of the Ludwig Fresenius schools today includes training and further education in the fields of therapy & prevention, naturopathy & alternative medicine, nursing & education, laboratory & natural sciences, technology as well as business & tourism.

Also in 2013 the participation in the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management took place. In 2015 the University for International Management Heidelberg (HIM) was bought, which has been part of the Hochschule Fresenius brand since 2017. In 2015, Cognos founded the Lunex University of Health, Exercise and Sports in Luxembourg.

Cognos AG acts as a strategic holding company for legally independent subsidiaries. The company operates vocational schools, private universities as well as academies and institutes for professional development in Germany and abroad. These include the Hochschule Fresenius , the Akademie Fresenius, the Lunex University in Luxembourg, the Academy for Business Executives and the Ludwig Fresenius Schools (formerly: The School for Professions with a Future). In addition to its own companies, Cognos AG has held a stake in the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management (formerly: Handelshochschule Leipzig) since 2013 .

Cognos AG is involved in the Nestor educational institute. The institute offers advanced and advanced training. The company operates 26 locations nationwide (as of 2016).

In autumn 2013, Cognos AG took part in the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management (previously: Leipzig Graduate School of Management). The focus of the participation is the joint use of the location network by HHL and the Hochschule Fresenius as well as close cooperation in research and academic promotion in the areas of health economics, business psychology and leadership.
