Colchester Castle

Colchester Castle is an English fortress in Colchester , Essex . The castle stands on the foundations of a Claudius temple from Colchester's Roman times and was built between 1070 and 1100. After it was partially demolished at the end of the 17th century, the owners built a landscape park around the castle in the 18th century. The castle ruins and park have been owned by the City of Colchester since 1922 and are open to the public. It houses the Colchester Castle Museum , which is themed about the history of the city.

The fortress with a mighty keep and the (not preserved) walls around it is inspired by the Tower of London . With a footprint of 46 x 34 m, the Keep in Colchester is the largest ever built in Great Britain and the largest in Europe, parts of which are still preserved. Science is divided on the former height of the building.
