Colliston Castle

Colliston Castle is a castle near Arbroath in the Scottish county of Angus . The residential tower with Z-shaped ground plan was in the 16th century Cardinal David Beaton , the Abbot of Arbroath Abbey , build. Today you can rent the castle for weddings and parties.

history

The property was loaned to John Guthrie and Isabella Ogilvy by Cardinal Beaton, Abbot of Arbroath Abbey and Bishop of St Andrews , on July 25, 1544 . David Beaton's longtime partner (over 20 years old) was Marion Ogilvy, and it seems likely that Isabella Ogilvy was the daughter of the two.

The original, Z-shaped section of Colliston Castle was built in 1583. It consists of a main block and two round towers that protrude at diametrically opposite corners. A stair tower sits in one of the interior corners between one of the towers and the main block. This round tower, in which the entrance to the castle is also located, has a top with a square floor plan and gables , in which there is a guard chamber. The layout of the castle corresponded to that of Claypotts Castle . The castle is abundant with widely splayed loopholes equipped and circular shooting holes for the defense. The wall heads and the entire upper floor have been rebuilt several times and are therefore not original.

Sir Henry Guthrie sold the property to Doctor Gordon in 1684 .

In 1721, Colliston Castle belonged to George Chaplin , succeeded by his nephew, George Robertson Chaplin of Auchengray , and then Dr. med. George Chaplin Child Chaplin . He died in 1883 and was succeeded by a Mr. Peebles from Somerset House in London , the next heir.

In 1920 John Hume Adams Peebles-Chaplin sold the castle to Major RFD Richard (Dickie) Bruce , son of the Hon. FJ Bruce of Seaton , a son of the Earl of Elgin . He had a rifle cabinet built into part of the original kitchen fireplace in the west tower. This room became the gun room. In 1929, Dickie Bruce was found dead in the hall of the house with his rifle beside him. After her husband's death, his widow married a lawyer from Arbroath with whom she had previously had an affair and sold the property to Captain Alfred Knox .
