history

Stock trading in Sri Lanka was initiated by the Share Brokers Association (SBA) in 1896. In 1904, SBA was renamed the Colombo Brokers' Association. A competitor later developed, the Stock Brokers Association. In 1985 the Colombo Brokers' Association merged with the Stock Brokers Association.

A formal exchange was established in 1985 with the establishment of the Colombo Securities Exchange (CSE). In 1990 the exchange was renamed the Colombo Stock Exchange. The CSE introduced the central depository system and clearing was thereby automated. In 1995 the CSE headquarters was opened in the World Trade Center in Colombo. In 1998 the exchange joined the World Federation of Exchanges .

The internationalization and growth of the stock exchange was long prevented by the civil war in Sri Lanka . After the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka on May 18, 2009, the CSE indices rose rapidly and set new records.
