Colonia del Valle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Colonia del Valle is one of the largest and most prestigious residential areas (Spanish: colonias ) in Mexico City , it is part of the municipality ( Delegación ) Benito Juárez . The district is located in the southwest of the city center along Avenida Insurgentes . The Colonial del Valle is bordered to the east by the Avenida Universidad / Avenida Cuauhtémoc, to the north by the city motorway Viaducto Miguel Alemán to the north, Avenida Cuauhtémoc and Avenida Universidad to the east, and to the south by the Circuito Interior on the Río Mixcoac .

history

At the beginning of the 20th century, the agricultural land ( ranchos ) was parceled out in this area. Until then, alfalfa and various fruit trees had been grown there. The names of the ranchos (Amores, Tlacoquemécatl, Santa Anita, San Borja) have been preserved in those of the colonias or in street names. At the beginning of the 20th century, a tram line to Coyoacán ran over the Avenida de los Insurgentes , but it wasn't until the 1920s that larger buildings and municipal facilities began, such as the Parque hundido (the sunken, low-lying park) on the site of a disused clay pit originated. The establishment of the urban expressways ( Ejes viales ) brought radical changes here, too , with the tranquil streets with tree-lined, wide median strips being converted into lanes with up to 8 lanes. The famous “Rancho del Artista” artists' bar complex, which the painter and sculptor Francisco Cornejo acquired in 1938 on Avenida Coyoacán 957 , also disappeared with the expansion of the street . Since the end of the 20th century, the construction of large office complexes, especially on Avenida de los Insurgentes, has increased significantly and has shaped the cityscape ever since.
