The Comenius Institute, Evangelical Work Center for Educational Science eV , is an institution of the member churches of the EKD , the Protestant teachers and school associations and the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) for the processing of tasks in the areas of education and theology , science and the public, practice and politics, church and school. It was founded in 1954 by Protestant teachers and educators' associations in conjunction with the EKD as a registered association and has been based in Münster / Westphalia since 1957 .

The Comenius Institute has the function of clarifying basic questions of Protestant educational responsibility, providing the basis for the dialogue between different groups and interested parties in the field of education, advising, coordinating and networking. The Protestant regional churches and the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) are members and main financiers of the institute in addition to the teachers and educators' associations. The highest organ of the Comenius Institute is the general assembly, consisting of representatives of the 22 Protestant regional churches , the EKD and 15 Protestant teachers, educators and school associations. The general assembly passed u. a. the work planning and receives the work report of the institute. The general assembly elects the board, which is composed of representatives of the churches, the associations, the EKD as well as from educational science , theology and religious education at universities. The board works on a voluntary basis. It elects the executive board and the chairman from among its ranks. In addition to church funding, the institute is financed through its own income and third-party funds.
