Commesso

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Commesso (from Italian: seamlessly assembled work; Florentine mosaic) is a stone carving technique .

This rare art form already existed at the Burgundian court in the late 14th and 15th centuries . In the 16th century, the technique came back into fashion under Henry II (1518 / 1547–1559) in Paris. Matteo da Nassaro from Verona was lured by Francis I to Paris as early as 1515 , where he installed water wheels in the Seine and founded the first French stone cutting center.
