Conduit is free software for data synchronization for the GNOME desktop. It allows the user to synchronize data from different sources ( PCs , online services or other devices such as cell phones ) .

The synchronization takes place via a large number of interfaces . These can handle different data types (text, graphics, binary) and can serve as one-way or two-way synchronization.

So it is possible to synchronize notes from Tomboy with Google Notebook or to keep data between two computers on the same level.

aims

Conduit aims to enable users to keep all of their information in sync - regardless of where it is stored. This is to be achieved by the fact that Conduit only functions as a general framework and thus eliminates the current problems that existing synchronization solutions usually only work for specific devices or websites.

Technical background

Conduit has a collection of data providers and converters. Data providers represent all possible resources such as connected MP3 players, websites or installed programs. They have a file format (e.g. picture, contact, note) and are either a source , a sink , or both. If the user tries to connect a data provider as a source with a data provider as a sink, Conduit will try to establish this data connection using the available data converters. There are a number of basic data formats so that a conversion only needs to be performed once and can be reused by all data providers who use the same data formats.
