The US Capitol Subway ( English United States Capitol Subway System ) is a subway below the Capitol complex that connects the Capitol in Washington, DC with its office buildings in three lines . It was open to the public until the attacks of September 11, 2001 , and since then, for security reasons, only congress members , their visitors and congress employees have been allowed to use it.

From the south wing, on the side of the House of Representatives , a train with drivers and individual cars runs between the Capitol and the Rayburn House Office Building . From the north wing, the Senate side , there are two lines: The first is also provided with drivers and leads from the Capitol to the Russell Senate Office Building . The second, driverless, linear motor- driven train runs from the Capitol to the Hart Senate Office Building and the Dirksen Senate Office Building .

The House and Senate stops under the Capitol are connected by a network of tunnels.

The first train ran on March 7, 1909 to connect the Russell Senate Office Building with the Capitol. The Dirksen Building was added in 1954, and the Rayburn House Building has also been connected since 1965. The last renovation took place in 1994.
