Conjunto Chappottín is a Cuban son band from Havana around the trumpeter, arranger and band leader Jesús Ángel Chappottín Coto and the percussionist and singer Miguel Cuní jr. The band has dedicated itself to the traditional son and is considered one of the still legendary groups in Cuba.
history
The founding of the band goes back well into the 1940s. Arsenio Rodriguez, the founder of the original formation, also known as "El Ciego Maravilloso" ("the fantastic blind man"), left Cuba in 1949 to undergo eye surgery in New York and handed over the leadership of the formation to Félix Chappottín, the first trumpeter of the then "Gran Conjunto" as the band was originally called. Under the new leadership, the formation took on the name "Félix Chappottín y su Conjunto todos estrellas". Félix Chappottín led the group very successfully until his death in 1983. From 1983 to the 1990s, the group was headed by his son Angel Chappottín Valdes, after his death, the leadership passed to his son Jesus Angel Chappottín Coto, who Band currently leads together with percussionist and singer Miguel Cuni Jr., son of the formation's former lead singer.
Surname
The formation changed names with the departure of the founder and first musical director Arsenio Rodríguez and was named "Felix Chappottín y su Conjunto todos estrellas" after the new director until 1983. The current name "Conjunto Chappottín y sus estrellas" stands for the musical tradition of the formation, which has lasted over three generations, with the grandson of Felix Chappottín as the new musical director.
