Conqueror Island is a tussock- covered island in the archipelago of South Georgia in the South Atlantic . It is in front of Fanning Ridge .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2009. It is named after the Royal Navy's nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror , which was used in the Falklands War in April 1982 to retake South Georgia after the armed forces of Argentina invaded .
