Fanning Ridge is a distinctive, approximately 8 km long and rocky mountain ridge that runs parallel to the south coast of South Georgia between Aspasia Point and the west side of Newark Bay .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1955 after the German-born traveling salesman Edmund Fanning (1769-1841), who transported 57,000 seal skins from South Georgia between 1800 and 1801 with the Corvette Aspasia .
