The Conservation Commons ( German : Conservation Commons ) is an initiative in November 2004 on the third IUCN World Conservation Congress in Bangkok from the IUCN World Conservation Union , was launched as at that time was called.

The Conservation Commons is not an organization and does not represent national or international law.

The central idea of this initiative was to promote the release of biodiversity information in order to facilitate the preservation of biodiversity . To this end, the initiative had formulated three basic principles that eligible organizations should support with their signature, which by January 2009 more than 96 organizations should have already done.

The three basic principles are:

Open access

  • The Conservation Commons promote free and open access to all data, information and knowledge relating to nature conservation.

Mutual benefit

  • The Conservation Commons welcomes and encourages contributors to both utilize resources and contribute data, information and knowledge.

Rights and Responsibilities

  • Those who contribute to the Conservation Commons have full rights to their data, information or knowledge and the right to have the integrity of the originals of their contributions protected from the general public. Conservation Commons users are expected to act in good faith and comply with the terms of use specified by the contributor.

A definitive list with currently 94 companies and organizations that have signed the Conservation Commons can be found here under the individual references.

The Conservation Commons are under the aegis of the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Center in Cambridge . The center is responsible for the operation of the web server and for corresponding publications.
