Constance Cummings-John

Constance Agatha Cummings-John (born January 7, 1918 in Freetown , † February 21, 2000 ) was a Sierra Leonean suffragette , politician and teacher .

She founded the women's organization "Sierra Leone Women's Movement" (SLWM). In colonial times she campaigned for the independence of Sierra Leone and operated on an international level against colonialism and for the legal equality of women. After the country gained independence, she held a seat in parliament as a member of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP).

In 1966 she was mayor of Freetown .
