The Convict Lake (German: Sträflingssee ) is a lake in the region of the Sherwin Range in the Sierra Nevada in the US state of California . The lake is framed by striking mountains and is a popular destination for recreational fishermen. It is drained by Convict Creek .
Origin of name
A group of convicts escaped from Carson City Jail were wanted by a squad led by Sheriff Robert Morrison. The squad met the convicts at Convict Creek in 1871, and Morrison was killed; Mount Morrison , located directly on the lake, was named after him. The lake also got its name because of this incident.
Trivia
- The incident leading to the naming was filmed in 1951 in the film "The Secret of Convict Lake".
