The Coocoran-Lake Opal fields (ger .: Coocoran Lake Opal fields ) are located approximately 20 kilometers west of Lightning Ridge on Coocoran Lake in New South Wales , Australia .

There are 50 Coocoran opal fields ranging in size from 1 to 20 hectares , which are named. The fields were developed during the time of the Great Depression and from 1990 about 80 percent of the black opals were extracted there . The opals are mined at a depth of 6 to 30 meters, mainly between 15 and 20 meters. Above all, the so-called nobbies are obtained, which appear on the top of the clay lenses , which are covered by heavily weathered clayey-bound sandstone .
