The Cooley Distillery was until December 2011 as the only independent whiskey - distillery in Ireland . It was founded in 1987 by John Teeling in Riverstown .

history

John Teeling bought a former state-owned potato distillery on the Cooley Peninsula on the east coast of Ireland. In less than two years this was converted into a distillery with two stills - one still using the pot still method , the other using the patent still method .

In 1988 Willie McCarter, a fellow Teelings student at Harvard , merged his Andrew A. Watt Distillery (founded in 1762, County Derry , Northern Ireland) with Cooley. Cooley then bought the John Locke and Co. (founded 1757, Kilbeggan ) brand , possibly the oldest licensed distillery in the world. The fires are stored at their location to ripen.

In 1998, Cooley received the trophy of the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) for outstanding achievements. Reason: “This award to Cooley is a sign that the quality of Irish whiskey is really recognized. Founded in 1987 in County Louth , the distillery Cooley produces a range of blended and single malt whiskeys which have built an impressive reputation and prompted the judges to award the trophy to a distillery for the first time in the history of the competition. "

In December 2011, the distillery was bought by Jim Beam for US $ 95 million. Jim Beam, in turn, was bought by the Japanese beverage company Suntory in 2014. Since then, Cooley's brands have also been part of the portfolio of the newly created Beam Suntory group .
