A hat switch , even hat switch ( engl. For pen - hat .., I.e., the Asian cone hat ), a, a control pad is similar, 8-way hat a gamepad or joystick . It is mainly used in computer games to control cameras, especially in driving or flight simulations to look around the cabin or to look through the (side) window.

From the four elementary directions (one direction each for one arm of the control pad; front, right, back and left), the nine states of a panoramic switch are formed: front, front-right, right, back-right, back, back-left, left , front-left and not pressed .

The term coolie hat is now avoided in English because the term can be seen as offensive (see coolie ). Instead, it is called a hat switch .
