The Core Audio Format (CAF) is a container for storing audio that was developed by Apple in 2005 . It is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 and higher; Mac OS x 10.3 requires QuickTime 7 .

The Core Audio Format was invented to overcome the limitations of outdated digital formats such as AIFF and WAV . Similar to the QuickTime .mov container format, a .caf container can hold a variety of audio formats, title metadata, and other data. Like the RF64 , this is not limited to a 4 GB file size. A single .caf file can theoretically hold hundreds of years of recorded audio because it uses 64-bit file offsets.

Soundtrack Pro and Logic Studio use the .caf format for their loop and sound effects library, especially for surround sound audio that has been compressed using the Apple Lossless Codec.
