Cornelius Atticus

Distinció Cornelius Atticus is the name of a sports award that has been given annually in the Balearic Islands since 1996 to outstanding athletes from the islands.

The award is made by the government of the Balearic Islands, the decision on its award is made by a jury made up of sports officials and Balearic politicians. Among the award winners are the six-time world champion Guillermo Timoner , the tennis player Rafael Nadal , the motorcycle racer Jorge Lorenzo , the Paralympic swimmer Xavi Torres and the two-time Olympic points champion (track cycling), Joan Llaneras . After there was only one common category until 2016, the prize has also been awarded in a second category specifically to women since 2017.

The name of the award goes back to the Roman pankratiast Cornelius Atticus Pancratius, who was buried in Mallorca in the 3rd century. Due to his name Atticus , it can be assumed that he was of Greek descent. His grave was found in 1933 in the Roman archaeological site of Pollentia near Alcúdia on Mallorca . His gravestone was also discovered with an epitaph in which the dead athlete is praised: he devoted his life to training his muscles through exercises in the palaestra and delighted the people with his art.

The award was named after Cornelius Atticus because he was the first known athlete from the Balearic Islands. The honored persons receive a glass certificate with a small replica of the gravestone with an inscription. The original is exhibited in the Museu monogràfic de Poŀlèntia in Alcúdia.
