Corporate philanthropy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under the name Corporate Philanthropy , Irving Kristol initiated the establishment of a network of conservative think tanks , foundations, elite journals and the mass media in 1977 . Hillary Clinton called this a "huge right-wing conspiracy," according to Chrystia Freeland . Even if the term suggests altruistic activities, according to Gabler Wirtschaftslexikon, strategic activities that serve to achieve corporate goals are subsumed here.

"On Corporate Philanthropy"

On March 21, 1977, the "spiritus rector" of American neoconservatism Irving Kristol published the call "On Corporate Philanthropy" in the Wall Street Journal , which was addressed to like-minded people - intellectuals and business leaders. His "corporate philanthropy" was fueled by the concern of many American businesspeople about losing the battle for ideas and aimed at organizing the winning of "the war of ideas and ideologies within the New Class" (by which Kristol meant the intellectuals). By reshaping the “climate of public opinion”, the intellectual dominance of neoliberal economic doctrine in favor of the preservation of capitalism is to be achieved. To this end, the economy should finance the establishment of institutions, so-called think tanks , in which those “dissidents” among the intellectuals “who really believe in the preservation of a strong private sector” can recruit an army for the intellectual battlefield and influence with their projects should take on government policy.

The success

As Freeland noted in 2012, Kristol triumphed with his wing of intellectuals and the triumph of capitalism became global with the fall of the Soviet Union. Worldwide, neoconservatism is now on the upswing and freedom of the markets has also prevailed in the emerging countries. While the universities are financially troubled today, think tanks are bursting with health thanks to the plentiful donations with which the blossoming super-elite is strengthening its influence over them. The awareness of the ideal leadership of the conservatives has also brought about a powerful cultural change and predominantly those intellectuals who are closest to the superelite prosper. They can multiply their income by being consulted and speaking, influencing public opinion on the economy and influencing politics as experts.
