Cortina (mycology)

The Cortina , also known as the veil , is a cobweb-like velum in fully developed fruiting bodies, which is particularly common in fungi in the family of the veil relatives ( Cortinariaceae ). The Cortina can be found between the edge of the hat and the handle (Velum partiale). In old mushrooms it is often dissolved and, as a residue of the veil, can usually only be seen as a spore-colored ring zone on the stem.
