Coup e-scooter in Tübingen

The former Coup Mobility GmbH operated a mobility service based on e-scooters in several major European cities ; it was a 100% subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH . After losses, the rental business was given up at the beginning of 2020, the moped fleet and charging infrastructure were sold to the pedal scooter rental company Tier Mobility in February 2020 .

history

It started in Berlin in August 2016 with 200 scooters from the Taiwanese company Gogoro . In summer 2017 Paris followed with 600 vehicles, in summer 2018 Madrid with 850 scooters and Tübingen with 30.

The entire fleet was expanded to 3,500 vehicles in 2018. In Paris and Madrid the service is offered all year round, while there was a winter break in Berlin and Tübingen.

At the end of November 2019, Coup announced that the service would be discontinued in Berlin and Tübingen in mid-December 2019, as the costs for operating the Coup fleet were too high. The offers in Madrid and Paris were also closed within a short period of time. A company spokeswoman specified the reasons for the termination of the service: "A continuation is economically impossible in the long term on the highly competitive sharing market with high costs at the same time". At the end of February 2020, the sale of the fleet to the competitor Tier Mobility was announced; he wants to integrate the vehicles into his own range, initially in Berlin.

Handling

The green and black painted scooters can be booked and unlocked using a smartphone app. The mandatory safety helmet is located under the bench. The company exchanges empty batteries at the storage location, which means that additional transport and personnel costs are included in the rental fee.

Since October 2019, Coup management has initially only tested a new battery handling system in Berlin for its fleet, which has now been expanded to 1,500 vehicles, called Coup Pit Stop : The user can drive to one of two charging stations with a charge level below 50 percent ( Mercedes-Platz in Berlin-Friedrichshain or in Stresemannstraße in Berlin-Kreuzberg on a supermarket parking lot) and there you can replace the weak battery with a full one in just two minutes, if necessary with the help of Coup employees who can be contacted there. This campaign gives the scooter rental company a credit of 30 free minutes worth 4.20 euros and saves the company transport trips. The company's charging center is located in a cellar in Kreuzberg's Charlottenstrasse. According to the company, only green electricity is used, with which 220 batteries can be charged in around two and a half hours.
