The Courvoisier SAS is a French cognac distillery in Jarnac in the Charente , which emerged there since 1828 and resident originally from the 1809 in Bercy in Paris by Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois founded liquor store. The distillery is now owned by the Japanese-American Beam Suntory concern.

history

Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois, the mayor of Bercy, opened a wine and liquor store on the north bank of the Seine just outside Paris in 1809. The house evidently earned a good reputation and, according to its own statements, was personally honored by Napoleon in 1811 with a visit to the warehouses. Felix Courvoisier and Jules Gallois, the successors of the founders, decided to take a new path and relocated the headquarters of their company from Paris to Jarnac in the Cognac region. When Felix Courvoisier died in 1866 without a male heir, he appointed his two nephews to run the company. They succeeded in establishing good trade relations with England. Due to increasing popularity, Courvoisier Cognac was served on the royal tables of Denmark, England and Sweden and in 1869 the company received the coveted title of "Fourisseur de la Cour Impériale", the official purveyor to Napoleon III's court . In 1909 the English family Simon took over management of the company. She had been in the English wine and liquor trade for generations. Alfred Simon, Courvoisier's agent in Great Britain, bought the company. In 1912 George Simon moved to Jarnac, where he was quickly promoted to assistant to the director and finally to managing director in 1923. The Second World War forced George Simon to leave France and return to England in 1940. From there he continued to run the company, but asked his friends George Hubert and Christian Braastad to take care of the company during his forced absence. When the château was used as a casino by the German army at the height of the war, he "sold" the company to his French friends to prevent it from falling into German hands. The promise to return it after the war was faithfully honored in 1945. Courvoisier is still the only cognac producer to have received the "Prestige de la France" award, the highest recognition for outstanding quality in France. The award was presented in 1983 by Jacques Chirac, then Mayor of Paris and later President of France.
