Governor Sir Edmund Andros

The Covenant Chain ("Federal Chain ") was an alliance between the English colonies in North America and the Iroquois League . The governor of the British colony of New York , Edmund Andros , had set himself the goal of consolidating English hegemony over European colonists and Indians . In 1677 he therefore invited the chiefs of the Iroquois League to Albany in order to win them over as allies against the French in New France and to intensify trade relations with the indigenous people. In return, he promised to protect the Iroquois from fraudulent land buyers from the colonies. In the future, land sales should only take place at regular meetings between the governor and the Iroquois League. The alliance became known as the Covenant Chain . From then on it linked the tribes of the League and the English colonies on friendly terms and existed until the middle of the 18th century.
