Cover 1

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cover 1 , also known as man-free , is a defense scheme in American football . The Free Safety covers the deep zone, while the cornerbacks and three other defense players go into man coverage. Four of the remaining five players act, practice the pass rush and one player can either flash or go into zone cover . If a player is used to support the defense of the pass, one speaks of cover 1 robber, since the free player can " steal " short and medium passes . Cover 1 is prone to big plays as only one player covers the deep field. Because of this, it is mostly only used on 3rd downs , where the reward of a stop ( punt , field goal instead of a possible touchdown ) outweighs the risks of a big play.
