Craigmarloch Stables

The Craigmarloch Stables are a former horse stable a few hundred meters east of the Scottish town of Kilsyth in the Council Area of North Lanarkshire . In 2006, the Craigmarloch Stables were added to the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

history

After the opening of the Forth and Clyde Canals in 1790 formed along the barrel Treidelstationen to accommodate the necessary towing horses. These stations also included the Craigmarloch Stables, which were completed around 1820. Since one had previously had bad experiences with the construction of towing stations on the damp soil in the immediate vicinity of the bank, the Craigmarloch Stables were built about a hundred meters away from the bank. You are right on a straightened canal inflow. After the end of the commercial use of the Forth and Clyde Canal in the 1960s, numerous towing stations were demolished, including other buildings of the Craigmarloch Stables. Since 1991, the former stables have been included in the Scottish Register of Endangered, Historically Significant Structures. Since the late 1980s, a possible further use of the former stables has been discussed without result. In the meantime the roof collapsed and the building fell into a ruinous state. The onset of tree growth is described in the interior.

description

The Craigmarloch Stables are a unique example of the architecture of the towing stations along the Forth and Clyde Canal. Architecturally, they correspond to the standard type, which was specially adapted to the needs of the sewer and is only preserved in a few examples today. The elongated stables are two-story buildings. The front of the canal is symmetrical with seven axes. Although the building is made of quarry stone, the front is decorated with sandstone ashlar stones . Above the protruding, central entrance area there is a triangular gable with a blind ox-eye . The windows are provided with round arches and now mostly bricked up; also a door to the hay store on the upper floor above the entrance.
