Former towing station on the Ruhr in Mülheim

A towing station has served since the Middle Ages on the towpaths ( towpaths ) of the navigable rivers for the maintenance and exchange of horses, with the help of which the ships were pulled upstream on lines.

From the middle of the 18th century, the Ruhraaken , in particular, transported hard coal on the Ruhr until the railroad took over the tasks of Ruhr shipping in the middle of the 19th century . A still partially preserved towing station - probably the only one on the Ruhr - can be found in Mülheim . Today there is a boathouse in the area of the stables. Other towing stations can be found in Düsseldorf-Wittlaer , Düsseldorf-Niederkassel , Bad Godesberg Zons , Kripp , Assmannshausen and Worms , many of which have now become popular restaurants or hotels.
