The Cranach monument on Wartburgallee , below the Wartburg in the southern district of Eisenach , commemorates Hans Lucas von Cranach (1855–1929), an important patron of Eisenach culture, co-founder of the Wartburg Foundation , the Thuringian Museum and the Reuter Wagner Museum . He was the orderly officer of the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach , Carl-Alexander and initially in his service from 1894 to 1929 Castle Captain of the Wartburg.

The memorial in the style of a tombstone shows the Cranach family coat of arms , a winged dragon , in a medallion-like upper part .

The inscriptions are placed in the middle:

  • above the Lindwurm: IN MEMORIAM
  • underneath the motto: THE TRUE TRUE - THE GRAYER
  • including: v.CRANACH
