CrashPlan is data backup software that allows users to back up data both locally and online, for example to friends or to the fee-based CrashPlan Central. CrashPlan was available in a free version for personal use and a commercial version called CrashPlan + for personal and corporate use. The free version "CrashPlan for Home" was discontinued in October 2018.

functionality

CrashPlan is data backup software written in Java for Windows PCs, Macs, Linux and Solaris. It enables platform-independent data backup, for example from a Windows PC to a Linux computer.

The software enables any data and programs that are currently open to be backed up on both local drives or drives that can be accessed in the LAN , as well as on remote storage shares accessible via the Internet. The latter can, for example, be on a friend's computer or, for a fee, from the manufacturer of CrashPlan.

The backup is made incrementally and versioned by means of deduplication , i.e. H. only changed data is transferred and changes are versioned and canceled. For example, it is thus possible to restore data in the state in which it was a year ago.

The data volume can be unlimited for chargeable accounts. There is no restriction in the file size, the data volume or the bandwidth and according to our own statements in the FAQ it should stay that way for the foreseeable future.

Files are transmitted and stored in encrypted form. By default, CrashPlan uses 128-bit Blowfish encryption for this, with CrashPlan + optionally also 448-bit.

CrashPlan offers an app for iOS , Android and Windows Phone that enables mobile access to the saved data.
