Online data backup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As online backup , online backup , Cloud Backup or Web backup is called a backup over the Internet . This is done on the data storage of an Internet service provider in a data center .

The process relieves the user of having to procure reliable data storage devices himself, to check it regularly, to manage it and to protect it against loss.

method

After logging in, the customer receives a user name and a password for access to the data backup. Internet access is a technical requirement . The software for data backup or uploading via a website should ensure secure encryption in order to protect the transmitted data from unauthorized access.

Because the data transfer rate of Internet access is usually only a fraction of that of drives and local area networks , the software can perform data compression as far as possible. Data that has already been compressed - for example in the ZIP , JPEG , MPEG or MP3 file formats  - can hardly be further compressed.

Internet access with a data transfer rate of 1 Mbit / s can theoretically transfer 450 MB per hour or 10.5 GB per day. This is, for example, a possible data transfer rate when uploading via ADSL 6000 in Germany. With faster internet access such as Even higher data transmission speeds are possible via VDSL , for example . Some service providers offer to exchange larger amounts of data by post using hard drives or DVDs , which is particularly useful for a larger initial backup.

Because of the relatively low data transfer rate, the incremental data backup process, in which only new and changed data is copied, is of particular importance. Some providers search files with their software for changed parts and only transfer the changed data blocks to the data memory (block level). Some recognize when files have just been renamed and do not retransmit them. Renamed file folders and files that have been moved cannot always be recognized, which can lead to file retransmissions.

Some solutions such as B. Netzdrive , Novell iFolder , Dropbox , Fabasoft Folio Cloud or Recovery Guard offer features such as the encryption of data on the server, the assignment of file access rights to certain other users or user groups, the replication of data to several servers and version control of Changes to, whereby properties similar to those of so-called distributed file systems are achieved. If access can be restricted, the functionality of this software partially overlaps with those for file sharing .

Some solutions maintain their server structure exclusively in Germany, which is why the entire data traffic is subject to the strict German data protection laws, with the consequence of additional protection against unauthorized access. Few solutions also offer end-to-end encryption , by means of which the data is already encrypted locally on your own computer and is therefore securely encrypted on the way to the server.

Modern providers not only offer online backup in their software, but also parallel backup on local media, such as a tape drive or USB peripherals. Companies should make sure that SQL databases such as B. Microsoft SQL Server are supported and a complete system disaster recovery in the event of a server failure is included. Also useful is a direct virus scanner integrated in the online backup software, which checks the data to be backed up or restored and thus increases the security of the backup.
