TeamDrive is an online service for secure collaboration and data exchange within work groups and teams as well as friends via the Internet. TeamDrive guarantees the protection of privacy when hosting files and offers online data backup . The free version "TeamDrive Free" contains 2 GB of storage space. The synchronization of files between desktop computers and mobile devices ( smartphones and tablets ) has been supported since version TeamDrive 3.

history

TeamDrive Systems GmbH was founded in 2005 under the name “PrimeSharing Deutschland GmbH” by the software development company “SNAP Innovation GmbH” (SNAP) in Hamburg. The development of the collaboration software "TeamDrive" was funded by the Hamburg Innovation Foundation with public funds from the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The "TeamDrive 1.x" product was only available for Windows operating systems. The current version 4 supports Windows, Mac OS X and Linux clients as well as Android and iOS clients. On the server side, Amazon Web Services are used as a default mediation and backup server.

Functions

TeamDrive uses a server- supported peer-to-peer- like communication structure to automatically transfer data between devices of one or more users and to keep them synchronized. TeamDrive thus realizes important basic functions of a distributed file system . Due to the continuous end-to-end encryption (256-bit AES ) with the latest encryption algorithms, it is not possible to read out data on the transport route and on the servers.

The TeamDrive client is central to the synchronization . The client, which is installed on end devices, monitors selected folders in the local file system and transfers new / changed content to the devices of the personally invited team members. New files and documents as well as changed documents are immediately available to other team members, even offline, on their computers. In this way, it is also possible with TeamDrive to synchronize folders and files between several devices of a user. The TeamDrive Client is available for all major operating systems.

TeamDrive uses various mediation servers to ensure communication between clients (especially across time zones and across firewalls). Your own or existing WebDAV servers can be used as mediation servers. The free software TeamDrive Personal Server , which is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux, is available for this purpose . Alternatively, services offered by commercial hosting partners can be used.

use

To use TeamDrive, the so-called client is required, which is available free of charge on the website. The use of the client is free of charge for non-commercial purposes and offers 2 GB of free memory. For recommending new users, the person making the recommendation receives 250 MB additional storage space with a maximum of 10 GB.

The Windows client is also available as a portable version that can be used from an external drive on a Windows PC, leaving no traces on the hard drive.

The TeamDrive WebClient can be used in the web browser on a computer on which no TeamDrive Client is installed .

Only one login per device is possible. Changing the user goes hand in hand with deleting and / or uninstalling the client.

Certifications

Until mid-2018, TeamDrive had the seal of approval for IT products for its versions 1.1, 1.3, 2.1 and 3 from the independent State Center for Data Protection Schleswig-Holstein (ULD) .

criticism

  • The costs are sometimes higher than with other providers of online data storage services .
  • Data is encrypted using a group-wide symmetric key. After data has been transferred to group members, they have a permanent key for all data in this area, even if they leave the group. However, TeamDrive ensures that the user can no longer access new data with his key.
  • Since the software is not open source , there is no possibility of independent testing of the implementation of the encryption method. TeamDrive declares that no back doors have been built into the software.
  • A special feature of TeamDrive is that all components of the system can be operated by the user on their own system in their own network, completely under their own control.
