Cresswell Castle (Pembrokeshire)

Cresswell Castle

Cresswell Castle is a ruined castle about half a mile north of the village of Cresswell Quay in the Welsh county of Pembrokeshire . It is on the banks of the River Cresswell on private estate, at the top navigable point of the river.

The buildings were originally the fortified mansion of a 13th century manor established by the Augustinian priory Haverfordwest .

The castle, in which the Barlow family presumably lived, consisted of three wings that were laid out in a square around a rectangular courtyard. The surrounding curtain wall has two vaulted towers at its ends, the larger of which later served as a pigeon house . Major changes were made in the 16th and 17th centuries, but the castle was abandoned at the end of the 17th century.
