The ship type had been developed by William Doxford & Sons on the basis of the Doxford Liner B draft and had similar dimensions as the bank ships of the Fleetbank class , but was about 1.6 meters wider. The type ship Crestbank and its sister ship Fenbank were built in 1978 as hull numbers 7 and 8 of the new Pallion shipyard by Sunderland Shipbuilders.
The ships had superstructures about three quarters aft above the machinery and five holds with a volume of 24,975 m³ (bulk cargo) and 22,517 m³ (general cargo). The hatch covers of the total of seven cargo hatches consisted of Erman's hatches, the segments of which were rolled up in a spiral shape, in contrast to the standard at the time. Four holds were arranged in front of the deckhouse and one hold behind the deckhouse. The ships had their own loading gear.
A Doxford six-cylinder, two - stroke diesel engine , which acted directly on the fixed propeller, served as the drive . The engine had an output of almost 9,000 kilowatts and allowed a speed of around 16 knots. The on-board energy was provided by three auxiliary diesels with an output of 450 kilowatts each.
