Crime Scene Unit

The Crime Scene Unit (CSU) is a specialized unit of the police force in the United States and Canada. The terms Forensic Investigation Unit , Forensic Crime Lab , Crime Scene Technicans or Crime Scene Investigation are also used. The latter was best known for the television series of the same name .

tasks

The Crime Scene Unit is responsible for securing evidence in criminal cases. This includes photographs of the crime scene , taking fingerprints , analyzing DNA , toxins and unknown substances. Briefly, the tasks can be summarized as documentation, collecting and storing evidence .

The forensic experts take action in all kinds of violent crimes. This of course includes both homicides and moral crimes. The Crime Scene Unit is also called when a shot is fired by police officers. The causes and the course of events are the focus of this investigation.

Usually the Crime Scene Unit is recruited from the ranks of the local police. For reasons of specialization, the unit was outsourced. Selected police officers receive additional training here. Usually a unit of the Crime Scene Unit consists of a sergeant and several forensic technicians (for example in New York and Jacksonville). The individual groups are under a commanding officer , e.g. B. a lieutenant .
