Cristo de La Laguna
The Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna is a large crucifix that is located in the Real Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna in San Cristóbal de La Laguna in Tenerife , Spain .
The image of Christ is a Gothic work from the 2nd half of the 15th century. A very special wood carving technique and a very special style make this image of the Redeemer something unique for the Laguneros and all Canarios . It is said that this picture was brought to the island of Tenerife in 1520 at the request of the then governor Alonso Fernández de Lugo . It is said to be a gift to De Lugo from the Duke of Medina Sidonia. You can admire this valuable work in the Franciscan monastery of San Miguel in La Laguna ( Real Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna ) outside the procession.
Every year on September 9th, the statue of Christ is carried to the Cathedral of La Laguna . However, the main day of the festivities is September 14th, when the image of the saint is brought back to its location in the Franciscan monastery of San Miguel de las Victorias. After the procession, which is well worth seeing, there is a fireworks display followed by a dance.
