Critter is a non - commercial computer chess program that is one of the most powerful in the world.
It is programmed by the Slovak software developer Richard Vida (* 1977). It was originally written in Object Pascal ( Delphi ). Since this language turned out to be unsuitable for a chess program, it has been developed in C ++ since 2009 . Critter uses bitboards and standard techniques like alpha-beta searching , pruning, and zero pull searching . According to its own statement, Vida has examined the code of the open source program IPPOLIT and adopted some promising ideas from it. From version 0.60 (April 2010) onwards, multi-processor systems with up to 8 threads are supported, from version 0.70 (May 2010) also Gaviota tablebases are supported. Critter does not have its own chess front end and uses the UCI protocol . There are versions for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Android. In computer chess rankings, Critter is in the top 50. In the ICT12 tournament of the Dutch computer chess organization CSVN, Critter took second place behind a cluster version from Rybka.
