Cromford is a municipality in Derbyshire , two miles south of Matlock on the River Derwent, of great industrial historical importance as it was the cradle of the Industrial Revolution .

Richard Arkwrights Cotton Mill

Richard Arkwright built the world's first cotton factory here in 1771, using the water-powered waterframe he developed , thereby revolutionizing cotton spinning. As the Masson Mill, the factory is now part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site .

A district of the Rhenish city of Ratingen , in which a good 10 years later the Cromford textile factory , based on the Arkwrights factory, was the world's first factory outside of England, is still named after Cromford today.
