Vallee d'Ossau

The 16 Cromlechs by Lou Couraus ( French Cromlech de Lou Couraus or Cromlechs d'Accaous ) are located in the Vallée d'Ossau near Bilhères near Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in France .

The circles that are sometimes only partially preserved or overgrown are remnants of excavated graves that have enclosed them and not real stone circles . While the 3 northern circles are separate, the southern circles (with the exception of no. 16) are so close together that most of them (sometimes even twice) are tangent to each other.

Cromlech 1 is the largest. It is approximately 9.0 m in diameter and has 18 stones in situ and some fallen over. Some are more than three feet tall. The ground inside is stony and slightly raised, which indicates the remains of a cairn . To the east is Cromlech 2, 3 meters away.

Cromlech 2 is about 4.0 m in diameter. The small circle consists of about 20 stones close together, many of them in situ. The largest stone is about 0.7 meters high.

Cromlechs 3 and 5 are covered in undergrowth, with # 3 possibly being a concentric circle.

Cromlech 4 has a diameter of about 6.0 m and 26 stones in situ, which are mostly close together, but also have several gaps. In the circle are more stones and the remains of a round central grave about one meter in diameter.

The Cromlechs 5 to 16 extend eastward over about 50 m with smaller stones and diameters of 2.5 m to 5 m. Circle 8 is about 5.0 m in diameter and with about 24 stones the largest of this group.

Nearby are the Soeix Cromlechs and the Buzy Dolmen .
