Crooke cell

As Crooke cells are hyalinized basophils of adenohypophysis referred to by the British endocrinologist Arthur Carleton Crooke described (1905-1990) for the first time. The ring-shaped storage of cytokeratins is also characteristic .

Crooke cells represent secondary regressive changes in ACTH- producing cells of the adenohypophysis in hypercortisolism and are typically observed in Cushing's syndrome , but also in non-neoplastic adenohypophyseal tissue after drug administration of cortisone.

The so-called Crooke cell adenoma , a rare variant of the ACTH cell adenoma , whose tumor cells have the morphology of Crooke cells, must be distinguished from this .
