CrossGolf (also X-Golf) and Urban Golf is a variant of classic golf . However, the game is not played on golf courses, but in all places that allow a game, such as in urban surroundings, green spaces, industrial wastelands or abandoned open-cast mines. The goals are either agreed on site or those inherent in nature are taken.

Crossgolf is not organized as an association in Germany. All decisions are made jointly by the cross golf community and you help and support each other.

In 2013, the founding of an umbrella association led to controversial discussions within the German cross golf scene.

Rules of the game

There are no generally applicable rules for cross golf except “safety first”. Rules are used differently from tournament to tournament and are adapted to the special playing conditions on site. The venue and local conditions decide on the choice of the game ball.

The number of golf clubs that can be used in the tournament also varies from region to region. These are established structures and they are rarely questioned by the players and are part of the appeal of competitions.

The number of holes / goals to be played varies from tournament to tournament and is adapted to the local conditions in terms of space and possibilities. As a rule, you orientate yourself on at least 9 tracks. There is no minimum length of the tracks, shorter tracks usually have a more technically demanding goal than long tracks.

The stroke game is mainly used in cross golf . Individual tournaments are still played in match play . These forms of play are borrowed from classic golf and partly adapted to cross golf needs.

The player with the fewest strokes in stroke play wins the tournament. The strokes of all courses are added up and give the overall result.

Match play is scored according to a different system. Here the valuation of classic golf has been modified a little. The results of both opponents are compared for each lane. If an opponent needed fewer strokes, he gets 1 point, the opponent 0. If both needed the same number of strokes, both get 0.5 points. After playing all lanes, the points are added up and the player or team with the most points wins. This system is used, for example, at the Raiders Cup.

Play device

Commercial golf clubs are used in cross golf , as they are also used in classic golf.

The different venues are taken into account with the different types of golf balls. On the one hand, the classic golf ball is used.

Soft balls are used for tournaments in city centers, city parks, shopping markets, stadiums and places with a high number of visitors. In Europe, the balls from almostGolf have prevailed and are official balls for the unofficial German championship EUGCQ (unofficial because there is no association in Germany) and the European championship EUGC . The Almost Ball weighs only approx. 15 grams (classic golf ball approx. 43 grams) with almost the same diameter (Almost golf ball 41.7 mm, classic golf ball 42.8 mm) and poses no danger to people, animals or objects. The flight characteristics of the Almost golf ball are almost identical, with 1/3 less distance. Softballs from other brands only play a subordinate role in the cross golf world.

Depending on the venue and the requirements of the owner of a tournament venue, tee mats, winter teas or similar agents can / must be used to protect the ground. Most players only play with two clubs. Iron 7 to bridge distances and a sand wedge to overcome obstacles. Depending on the surface or the use of tee mats, however, players also use complete half-sentences including sticks.

development

At the end of the 1990s, crossgolf experienced a new boom across Europe and since then clubs and crews have formed in many places that play crossgolf in their region and advertise their sport to the public. There is no shrinking from classic golf fairs either. Print media such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Spiegel and Stern reported and contributed to the spread.

The “Natural Born Golfers” played a key role in bringing crossgolf to the public's attention and focus with a large number of television appearances during this period. In addition, there were contributions and articles in large regional and national magazines.

Besides France, which plays an organized national league, cross golf is widespread in Germany. There are regional differences in terms of the density of clubs / crews and players. It is therefore not possible to give precise details to players.

Leagues

A Germany-wide league system has not yet been established.

In southern Germany there are several tournaments every month, but they are not grouped together in a regional league.

There has been a regional league in the Berlin - Leipzig - Köthen area since 2009. Founded under the name “Mitteldeutsches Crossgolf Ranking” (MCR), it was renamed in 2012 to “Mitteldeutsche Crossgolf Liga” (MCL). At the beginning, all the tournaments held by the crews and clubs in this area were combined into one rating. Since 2012 there has only been one tournament per crew / club.

To ensure comparability, the placements are converted into points. Formula 1 serves as a template. For the 1st place you get 15 points, the 2nd gets 13 points, the 3rd place gets 11 points, the 4th place gets 10 points and that goes down to the 13th place, which gets one point. At the last valuation tournament, the best players in each valuation class are honored.

Others

One golf variant that is often confused with cross golf is GolfCross. In this variant from New Zealand, an egg-shaped golf ball, comparable in shape to a rugby ball, is used instead of an ordinary golf ball. The goal is a goal with a net that also looks like a rugby goal. This variant is played on green areas, similar to a normal golf course.
