Cruzeiro de Algés
The Cruzeiro de Algés is a field cross in the center of the small Portuguese town of Algés .
location
The cross is at the entrance of the Palácio Ribamar , at the intersection of Rua João Chagas and the Alameda Hermano Patrone.
history
It was built in 1605 during the personal union with Spain. In the 19th century, lightning struck the cross and it broke into several pieces. It was restored by order of the Conde de Cabral . Bronze flanges connect the parts ever since. On its base there is an inscription in Portuguese: Ice aqui a Cruz do Senhor. Fugi gentes desafectadas. Venceu o leão da tribo de Judá ea raiz de Davi. Aleluia! Aleluia! A cidade em 1605
The Algés cross differs from two crosses of the same height in the immediate vicinity, in Cruz Quebrada and in Linda-a-Pastora , in its larger dimensions and finer design.
Because of its high symbolic power for the city, it was used in the local coat of arms.
