history
The area has been used as a recreational area since the early 1920s. Tents and caravans were used by holidaymakers as overnight accommodations. In the 1930s, residents began building permanent housing. Little by little, dozens of small cottages were built . At that time, the film industry from nearby Hollywood was using the settlement as a South Seas backdrop.
In the late 1930s, the Irvine Company , who owned the site, banned any further development. The state of California finally bought it from the company in 1979. In the same year, the settlement was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
The historic wooden houses are considered examples of coastal development in the early 20th century . 46 of the cottages still exist today. About half of this was restored and made habitable. The houses are available for rent to vacationers. The Crystal Cove Alliance takes care of the revitalization and preservation of the settlement.
Every second Saturday of the month, there are guided tours that provide information about the history of the Crystal Cove Historic District.
