Cubana flight 2886 was a domestic scheduled flight of the Cubana from Camagüey to Santiago de Cuba , on which a Yakovlev Jak-40 hit four kilometers from the runway on October 24, 1990 . Eleven people lost their lives in the impact.

Flight history

It was raining heavily at the time of the flight. Cubana flight 2886 left Camagüey airport at 01:04 a.m. local time (07:04 a.m. CET). The first attempt to approach runway 9 using the so-called non - directional radio beacon at Santiago de Cuba Airport was canceled at 01:51 a.m. local time (07:51 a.m. CET). Another attempt at 1:55 a.m. local time (7:55 a.m. CET) was also canceled. As a result, the crew attempted a visual landing on runway 27. The aircraft hit mountainous terrain four kilometers from the runway. The impact killed eleven people.

examination

The investigation sees the cause of the accident in the incorrect actions of the pilots. After their second failed landing approach, they switched from instrument flight to a visual approach, although they were aware of the poor visual conditions and the mountainous terrain. These circumstances made a visual flight practically impossible.
