Cumdach
A Cumdach [ kuṽdax ] ( Old Irish , Modern Irish : cumhdach , protection, cover, shrine) is a rectangular container for storage of precious books , which in the Middle Ages in Ireland was used.
Cumdachs were made of bronze, brass or wood and had gold and silver ornaments . A total of only ten Cumdachs are known, the oldest three of which have not survived. The well-known Cumdachs are:
- Cumdach of the Book of Durrow , between 877 and 914
- Cumdach's Book of Armagh , 938
- Cumdach of the Book of Kells , 1007
- Cumdach of Molaise's Gospels ( Soiscél Molaise ), between 1001 and 1025
- Cumdach's Stowe Missal , 1023
- Cumdach des Cathach of St. Columba , 1084
- Cumdach of the Book of Dimma , 1150
- Cum roof of the Domnach Airgid ,
- Cumdach of Cairnech's Calendar , 1534
