Cumhuriyet Anıtı
Cumhuriyet Anıtı (in English: "Monument of the Republic") is a monument in the western half of Taksim Square in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul . It is supposed to commemorate the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923. The monument, designed by the Italian Pietro Canonica , was unveiled on August 8, 1928 by Hakkı Şinasi Paşa after two and a half years of construction.
The eleven meter high monument shows, among others, the founder of the Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , the first Prime Minister İsmet İnönü and the Chief of Staff Fevzi Çakmak . On the south-facing side, Ataturk is depicted as a statesman in Western European clothing, while the north-facing side shows him as a military person. Among the people depicted are allegedly two high-ranking Soviet officers, Marshal Kliment Voroshilov and General Mikhail Frunze , who are supposed to commemorate Lenin's military support in the Turkish war of liberation .
Official ceremonies are held at the Monument of the Republic on national holidays.
Individual evidence
- ↑ The daily Radikal reported on August 11, 2002 about the otherwise unproven depiction of the Soviet officers on the memorial, allegedly at the express request of Ataturk .
