history

In 1956, the American company Cummins Engine opened its first production site outside of Indiana in Shotts . The buildings of an older textile factory were used to produce diesel engines for locomotives that were used in British trains. The plant was expanded just five years later. In the mid-1970s, planning began for a significant capacity expansion at the Shotts location. By 1983, today's facilities were built according to a design by the architects Ahrends, Burton & Koralek . More than 2000 people were employed there until the site was finally given up in March 1998.

description

Architecturally, the factory in Shotts is one of the most important British industrial plants of the 20th century and is considered the main work of Ahrends, Burton & Koralek in the 1970s. The architecture firm, which was founded in the late 1950s, had already built a reputation for creative, modern design by then. In addition to the client, the workers, authorities and engineers were also involved in the planning. Modern buildings with a functional, rational design emerged, which could be the only ergonomic manufacturing facility in Scotland. In the planning, motifs from similar plants, such as the Volvo factory in Sweden , were adopted. However, a completely independent plant was created, which is designed for the production of diesel engines. Existing buildings were merged with the new building.
