history

Early history

From around 1884 the port of Brisbane grew rapidly, so the city council decided to replace the customs building called Petrie Bight with a larger one, the Customs House. When the new building, designed by Charles McLay, was completed and opened after three years of construction in 1889, it had consumed £ 38,346.

The Victorian-style building is considered the first authority in Australia to have its own coat of arms.

Present time and recent past

After several large port companies settled in the area around the city's port, the building became redundant over time, so it was closed in 1988. Upon its closure, the building was immediately rented from the University of Queensland and renovated from 1991-1994 for 7.5 million Australian dollars .

Today there is a restaurant and an event center in the building. The "Long Room", in which the business was run at that time, is mainly used for readings and as a restaurant.
