A cyclocross bike or cross bike for short is a bike for use in cross-country races . It is a hybrid of a racing bike and a mountain bike , as it combines properties of both types.

concept

Cyclocross bikes were developed from road racing bikes. The frame geometry differs noticeably from a racing bike: The cyclocross frames have a relatively short top tube and a short wheelbase . The larger clearance between the frame stays, a longer chain stay and adapted brakes, compared to a road racing bike, enable the use of treaded and wider tires for the terrain.

Initially, the frames were made of steel, now of aluminum and synthetic resin reinforced with carbon fibers (carbon). Since the bikes are used for jumping in competitions and the drivers have to carry them occasionally, the aim is to keep the weight as low as possible. The frames are usually designed to be more resilient than racing bike frames. First, cantilever brakes were installed; Mechanically or hydraulically operated disc brakes are now standard. Classic rim brake bodies from racing bike equipment groups can only be used to a limited extent, as they usually only offer enough space for tires up to a maximum width of approx. 28 mm. A suspension is not used.

  • Short frame geometry for agile driving off-road
  • Racing bike handlebars and groupsets known from the racing bike sector
  • Cantilever or disc brakes (hydraulically / partially hydraulically operated) with a diameter of at least 160 mm
  • 28 inch wheels. Narrow knobby tires, no wider than 33 mm for competition - without mudguards
  • a high bottom bracket ensures more ground clearance in the field

Application area

Cross bikes are suitable for difficult to very difficult terrain. Due to their light construction, they can also be carried on the shoulder to overcome steps in the terrain. The pronounced knobby tires are not suitable for driving on even and hard surfaces. Because of the lack of mudguards, they are not very suitable for everyday use.
